A great way for your church group or youth group to make money is by having a bazaar or rummage sale. The difference between a mundane sale and one with pizzazz that makes more money for your group can be summed up with a few easy tips.
Location, location, location.
When planning your rummage sale, pick a good location where you will get attendance from more than just your members – if the weather is good, find an outdoor location that is visible from the street. Some ideas are school basketball courts, playgrounds, dance school parking lots, medical office parking lots. Most of these are not in use on the weekend and with permission from the owner, can be great venues for your rummage sale. If it’s rainy or very cold or hot weather, have your rummage sale indoors but at a location people of different faiths and creeds will feel comfortable coming to.

It is crucial that your group members spend their efforts leading up to the event to spreading the word. This can be through posted flyers, door to door flyers, emails, calls to friends and family – whatever it takes to get the word out. If you can have members of your congregation hand out flyers near the rummage sale on the day before and day of the event, perhaps at a market nearby, that will encourage attendance.
Organize merchandise in an appealing way.
Separate clothes and hang them when possible by size, gender and color or season. Make your visitors feel like they are in a store so that they spend like they are in a store. Get volunteers from your group to maintain an organized “storefront”. Have departments, organized by room so that people who are looking for dishes can come straight to the kitchen section and find what they want.
Offer great bargains!
Your goal is to sell everything at your rummage sale. Work with buyers so they feel they are getting a great deal and remind them that they are supporting your great cause.
If you present the goods in an appealing way, offer great deals, pick a good location and most of all – REALLY get the word out, your rummage sale can be a fantastic way to make tons of money for your church or youth group.
